The charms of the Holi season

Mar 10th, 2012 | Category: Life and Living

IT’S THE springtime season of Holi and Women’s International Day and I’m thinking how ironic our urban, industrialised lifestyles can be! It’s a pleasure to wake up these balmy, salubrious early spring time mornings of the month of Phalgun when my balcony potted harshingar and mogra are offering up bounties of fragrant flowers.

Good-bye Digamber-bab, hello Manohar-bab!

Mar 10th, 2012 | Category: Life and Living

IT’S BEEN an interesting finale to the spring time festival of Holi and quite, quite complementary, come to think of it, my dears. After all springtime is for new beginnings! Funny, how Goans lined up so grimly to vote and in the queue myself for half-an-hour, I thought it was much like a funeral wake.

Bitten by the political bug!

Mar 3rd, 2012 | Category: Life and Living

By Tara Narayan
I’VE BEEN bitten by the political bug, so I’d like to give the usual foodie talk a break! I mean this is a crucial week in Goa and I’m in the mood for some food-for-thought talk about whether we are going to get an aam aadmi or a khaas aadmi government in Goa. […]

‘Goencho brastachar hai hai, Trinamool Congress amka zai!’

Mar 3rd, 2012 | Category: Life and Living

THIS ONE is for the Goa I love. Even in my social diary, my dears, the P word is being fiercely discussed and perfectly educated folk are coming to blows over whether to vote for the corrupt Congress or the communal and corrupt BJP… and who has lost credibility and who still enjoys some credibility in the eyes of their voters. A friend’s SMS is haunting me: “Elections make me sick literally. It exposes our collective impotence in the face of delusions some of us entertain, that I or we can make a difference. It is pathetically humiliating! The greed of voters is far more appalling than the display of money power by candidates! I want to abdicate, hide in my own pond, I feel paralysed with the certainty that we are doomed, because like Arjuna, we vacillate while Krishna argues eloquently on the necessity of murder!”

Return to millets!

Feb 25th, 2012 | Category: Life and Living

IN A country where rice and bread are staples, one is constantly on the search for wholesome rice (if you’re from the south) and wholesome roti (if you’re from the north)…and then there’s bread as in baked bread, introduced to the Indian sub-continent courtesy either the Persians or the hundreds of years of Western colonisation (is the tandoor Persian in origin?). Every now and again, I find myself looking for honest 100 percent bread - be it unleavened roti desi-style or leavened baked bread phoren-style

And now Saturday high tea at the Grand Hyatt Goa…

Feb 18th, 2012 | Category: Life and Living

DON’T ASK me how I found myself tucking into a scone (redolent of baking soda) dipped in light lashings of mascarpone cheese spiked with orange juice maybe, egg and cress sandwiches, itsy bitsy tea time cakes…homemade bottles of orange, strawberry and fig jams lined up…

Medha Patkar… a “politician” to emulate!

Feb 18th, 2012 | Category: Life and Living

SOMETIMES, my dears, I think the best thing to have happened in Digamber Kamat’s Goa in recent times is the D D Kosambi Festival of Ideas. The Directorate of Art & Culture has been doing a superb job selecting personalities who have it in them to ignite the minds of Goans - the Dinanath […]

Business Goa Awards go ga ga…

Feb 11th, 2012 | Category: Life and Living

By Tara Narayan
THE CHILL is going out of the sunshine these days, my dears, and after some lapse I went socialising, beginning with the Business Goa Awards function held at Tito’s Courtyard on February 7, 2012.
The Tito’s party complex keeps growing and growing and visiting it is an experience in going down tier after tier […]
